What Is Mold & Fungus?
Molds are a type of fungus that can be found almost everywhere. Mold is often found in areas that have high humidity levels such as bathrooms, kitchens and laundry rooms. Mold can grow quickly to produce unfavorable conditions including allergic distress and damage to property. In recent years the medical authorities have realized what a health risk the kind of mold that grows in a home can be.
Those most affected by mold are infants, children, elderly people, pregnant women, individuals with respiratory conditions, and persons with weakened immune systems.
Mold requires both food and moisture to grow. Food can consist of almost anything organic. This includes clothing, paper, wood, plants, drywall, some insulation, and ceiling tiles. If there is water damage of any type or repeated water exposure, mold spores will continue to grow until the water is removed.
Since it is virtually impossible to entirely eliminate the presence of mold spores, mold remediation can stop the growth and spread of spores. Once moisture is gone, remediation can begin. When damage is severe it may involve the removal of affected building materials such as drywall and the use of a HEPA filtration system to remove mold spores. The use of surfactants, mildewcides and sealants to remove and contain mold and mold spores.
